But it has retained their connection to magic and their pride as Esmaranda's most privileged.

Synopsis:

To understand the goodly folk known as the High Elves, you must first know their story. It is said that in ancient times, when the mists of creation still churned, and the old magic had not yet faded, the elvin ancestors, known as the Sidhe began to flourish into creation. They were a strange race. With unparalleled beauty and magical power. And they were created into the image of Esmeranda herself. The world goddess. The world was originally intended for them. But other spirits began to interfere with the children of the goddess. And though she tried to stop them, the Sidhe would be tricked into the curse of mortal existence. With physical bodies capable of feeling the discomfort of pain, cold, and illness. The young Elves were always a part of the world. Esmeranda, unable to change them back without having to rewrite the song of creation, instead attempted to accommodate the mortal elves into her song. She created the verse of Earth for the Wood Elves. The Verse of Fire, for the Ash Elves. The Verse of Ice for the Ice Elves. The Verse of Wind for the Dune Elves. And lastly, for the high elves, the Verse of Light. All of these verses were meant to better attune them into the world. Giving them purpose, affinity, and a path of fulfillment. And the early elves who dwelled in the young world took this to life, for as long as they could remain harmonic in the melody of creation, they could find a way back to becoming Sidhe once more. The Light Elves were said to be the mediators between the different groups. Conveyers of wisdom and guidance toward those who would start to grow discordant from the song. They had a natural affinity towards the unlimited power of the arcane, where as the others held the elemental spheres. And they stood as the protector race for all those who had been harmed by the other creations that the lesser gods began to flood into the world. But lesser races, and soon even the Ash Elves themselves began to grow jealous of Esmeranda's most privileged race. And due to this envy, the Ash Elves drifted from the harmony of their verse.

But a new race had begun to appear in the world. Whether they were made by Esmeranda or not, the humans had stepped foot into the world. And they were here to stay. Esmeranda was optimistic about the new race, believing that they would help the elves the other goodly races. The humans of this time were different than the ones of today, however. For they had much longer lifespans. And a strange, spiritual magic. The Ash Elves were not so receptive towards these beings, and often preyed upon them for sport. But when the high elves stepped into defend them, the first war between the elvin peoples ensued. And after centuries of chaos, the Ash Elves had lost their harmony, growing completely disconnected with the song in the process. They would be driven underground, and the humans of Almora would be given their lands. But because the verse of fire had ended, so too did the old magic fade from the world. And the Almorans lost their long lives. The Ice Elves were the next to grow discordant. For blaming the humans with what had happened, they misused the song of ice to flood the world and scatter the Almorans. Causing them to descend once again into tribes of savagery. The High Elves would go on to ensure that the Ice Elves would not loose their power completely. But they would never truly resume harmony with it either. But then, the human tribes began to settle. Feeling pity for the broken race of men, the high elves decided to take them under their wing. They would show them how to build. How to rule. How to farm. How to read and write. Other groups of humans were said to have been forming civilizations around the world at this time, after all, a surviving Almoran colony in Sheqadah had been operating in Northern Nomeria since the collapse, and showed no sign of falling. But the Ancient Eugencian empire? This was the product of the light elves. Yet again, the humans grew noble and civilized, just as the light elves. And the early unionship lasted for quite some time. Until the trust of men would yet again be betrayed, with a greedy king ascended the throne and sought to conquer the protectorate state. The Light Elves would once again stir against the current of their song in order to defend themselves. Weaving magics of destruction that the world would never again see. And this would sway them into a divergent song all together. They would later grow to loose control over their magics. And they would loose their empire in the process. The survivors of the light elf race would then take on the name High Elves. For their shame, they would have to atone by elevating themselves higher in order to make up for their arrogance.

This marks the end of the Light Elves, and the birth of the High Elves. A race which unlike their other elvin brothers, prefers life in the city to that of the untamed wilderness and sprawling frontiers. They have strayed from the natural world, and as such, become softened by the convenience of civilization, which in the past they were unfazed by. Still as long lived as ever, with a connection to magic that few other mortal races could match, the High Elves find themselves facing increasing anxiety as the world around them becomes a shadow of what it once was. Though no surviving high elves are old enough to recount the fall of their race, it is immortalized all over the hills and valleys of central Estellon. Elvin ruins and cities, echoes of a massive kingdom that fell prey to the very thing they once swore to guard the elvin races from. And while some nations, such as the new (In Elvin terms) Elf nation of Valoron are attempting to atone for this folly, the world goddess is gone, the song that once guided them has become random and disjointed, and there are yet some who still blame the humans for everything. They now war with the Ice Elves, a conflict which they managed to avoid in ancient times, and the secrets of arcane magic once exclusive to the Light Elf race have begun to permeate through human cultures. The new god has favored the humans, and the devil Azazazi yet lives despite the high faith's attempts to stamp it out. But High Elves continue to be a proud race of elves. Even if arrogance was their original sin, high elves still feel it in resonating in their souls. Within the divergent harmony of the song of creation are echoes of melodies that are familiar to them. If they are to live in a broken world, then they just might have to give the other races a reason to see what they themselves feel so clearly. They are still the privileged race. And they will bring the goddess back. After all, the new verse has proven that there is more to the song than they once thought.
